Stuck by Londin - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my entire educational career I have learned many things from how to cite sources to dissecting a flower. I have realized that some skills learned have not and most likely will not ever be applied in real life. I asked my eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Dunn, why is it necessary that I learn so many subjects that become seemingly useless in real life? Her response, in short, was that one will become complacent being average. My high school experience started out rough because I was uninspired and content with earning letter grade C’s. It took me two years of my high school experience to realize that being average was not going to help me compete with others who are rather exceptional. My grade point average suffered because of my lack of drive and complacency, but I was able to raise my grade point average to a letter grade B upon graduating from high school. Mrs. Dunn’s response helped me learn the most important lesson that average is not inspiring
When I first entered the doors of Ferris State University I was aware that I was also opening a door to many opportunities. I did not know where I would be in five or ten years but I did know where I did not want to be and that is stuck. Stuck with the same worries and the same goals that have simply become words on a paper. Stuck complaining, making excuses why I have not accomplished my dreams. I learned to think more critically about how I would inspire others and accomplish my goals. With this new discovery of self I began forming ideas of what type of career was good for me and that no matter what, I would not become stuck or average.
I want to be someone who gives back to the community somehow, someway. I have served the community at God’s Kitchen Downtown Grand Rapids. I have spared time to train and visit with hospice patients through Spectrum Health Hospice program. I have participated in Pay it Forward at Grand Rapids Community College to simply pay for someone’s meal or pump the elderly gas. I have given back to my community but this is something I will do for the rest of my life.
I have a dream of walking the stage at graduation, degree in hand. My primary goal for going to school is to complete my Bachelor of Business Administration degree and become a successful owner of a non-profit organization that gives back to the community someway, somehow. Without a significant source of income for this academic year, my dream of obtaining my bachelor’s degree has become more difficult. Receiving this scholarship will help me stay on the path to righteousness. My parents will be so proud considering I would be the youngest and first in my family to graduate with a four-year degree. Along with my parents, I am positive that I would make my teacher, Mrs. Dunn, proud knowing that something she said created a go-getter. If chosen by the scholarship selection committee I will be one step closer to achieving my dreams.
