The Journey of Science: From Passion to Purpose by Lois - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

A subject that has sparked my curiosity and passion for learning is the subject of biology. I took my first biology course as a freshman in high school and decided a year later that I wanted to pursue a career in pediatrics with a biology major. The class uncovered a hidden zeal that I had which would lead me to pursue a career along that path.

Three things in particular caught my attention on this multifaceted topic. First; the concept of cell division, second; the diverse organ systems, and third; genetics. I find it fascinating how cells undergo the processes of mitosis and meiosis. How one cell multiplies to 30 trillion, and a zygote in a confined environment becomes a fetus with eyes, limbs, and a mouth. Studying the functions of bodily systems—such as the nervous system—intrigues me as the human brain, the command center of the human body, makes up less than 5 percent of the body’s mass, yet is so significant. Examining punnett squares and determining the possible genotypic and phenotypic outcomes created an enthralment in me towards mutation-caused diseases such as Down syndrome and sickle cell anemia. These topics in biology are facets that I took beyond the classroom and began to explore in my personal time.

This area of study has profoundly influenced my academic pursuits, inspiring me to not only expand my knowledge but to impart this knowledge to others. It has led me to wonder how I can relate this to my life’s vision of impacting others productively. My interest in Biology combined with my love for teaching, training, and taking care of children—a love that resulted from working in a daycare center for six years—has inspired me to become a pediatrician. To help a population of individuals who cannot help themselves and who struggle to communicate the reality of their situation.

Ultimately, I want to provide quality care and support for children. I will be successful in this mission as I continue in my passion for studying living organisms and gain a deeper understanding of how their minds work and their bodies function. I aim to effectively apply the knowledge I have and will acquire to provide substantial value to others.
