The President I Would Have Dinner With by Logan - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
The president I would have dinner with is George Washington. I'm not saying this for no reason, but, if I had a choice, he would be one of two I would choose. These were my reasons when I chose him. How did he view the first, second, eighth, and ninth amendments? How far would he let freedom of speech go? How far would he let the second amendment go? What did he consider cruel and unusual punishment? Finally, how did he interpret the ninth amendment?
First, what how did he interpret the phrase, given the entire wording of the first amendment, “freedom of speech”? What was that to him? Would he have allowed certain things that we don't? Would he prohibit things that we allow?
Second, how did he view the second amendment? Would he have allowed any kind of weapon? Would he have allowed exceptions? How would he answer the shootings we are having in modern America?
Third, how would he view the eighth amendment? What, to him, was cruel and unusual punishment? Did he think the death penalty was too much or did he view it as inflicting pain with guns, repeated punches and, or, kicks?
Finally, how did he view the ninth amendment? It says “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.” (from billofrights.org) What did he think of it. How did he define “[other rights] retained by the people[]”?
