Franklin D. Roosevelt: An American Hero by Logan - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
I have always had a keen interest in American politics, and at the center of America’s political system is the President himself. American Presidents, current or former, have all led our beautiful nation at some point in our history and without each of them, we would not be where we are today. Some Presidents, however, have led the nation in more crucial times than others, cementing their presidency in not only leadership, but fame.
Among this list of famous leaders, including Washington and Lincoln, is the longest serving President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Having the chance to have dinner with this man would be a great honor. Roosevelt, popularly known as FDR, brought the nation through the biggest economic recession the United States has ever seen, the Great Depression. Through his economic policies, social welfare programs, and strong implementation of such programs, Roosevelt did the impossible. In addition to the economic problems FDR faced, he also served as President through World War II, in which over 16 million Americans fought overseas. Both of these issues were tremendous in size and magnitude and could have easily caused anyone to back away from the responsibility of fixing them both. Roosevelt did just the opposite of this however and was elected for four consecutive terms. On top of the major crises and responsibility placed on the President, Roosevelt had become permanently paralyzed to do a paralytic illness. Over dinner, I would love to ask this great man simply how he was able to cope with the pressure. I would want to ask him how he made his economic policies. What were his influences? I would also want to ask if he could go back and change something during his long tenure, what would it be? FDR has left such a lasting impact on our society today that there is an endless amount of questions to be answered.
Therefore, I would like most to have an evening dinner conversation with Franklin D. Roosevelt because I consider him one of the greatest American men to ever lead our country. With the weight of a nation on his shoulders, multiplied tenfold by the events happening economically and militarily, along with his physical disability, Franklin D. Roosevelt was not only a leader but in the purest form of the word, a hero.
