A Switch in Rails by Lizthebett - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

I had just moved to a new school for seventh grade and that meant that I didn't really actually pick any of the classes I was going to be taking, they just based my new schedule on the one I had at my old school. One class that didn't fit in with what I had taken before was an engineering elective. At the time I believed I was going to be a doctor so I never looked forward to going to that class.
One day Mr. Jaycox was giving a lesson on drawing buildings that really amazed me. After that class all the assignments seemed very easy for me and possibly even fun. I came to realization actually would rather be an engineer than a doctor not until we did a project were we made our own paper boat that would hover over the ground when launched.I noticed then that engineering involved my favorite things, math and drawing. I was amazed by what I was capable of learning and how fun it felt. That class never felt like a class I was obligated to do since it was always the highlight of my day.
Today, because of that class, I'm in the engineering program at Akins High School. I have taken many classes and have decided to go to college to pursue a computer engineering degree that involves both computer science and electrical engineering. I have also gone to a coding summer camp at the University of Texas' campus for two weeks because of just a class that I've taken in seventh grade. I'm very thankful for the person who assigned me to take that class, because they switched the rails that I had determined to take for my future.
