Be kind and believe in yourself by Lize - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
When I was in 6th grade, I enjoyed writing poems. Everything was an inspiration to me. I was going through a self-discovery journey and understanding how others thought and behaved. Through the books we had we read in class I learned that I could just write.
Back then, I was on the other side of the cool girls. There were smart girls who wanted everyone to know they were smart and one of them was also part of the mean girls group - at least they were mean or not so kind to me. One teacher of mine noticed the dynamics and she found a way to help me through the challenge without directly pointing out the problem or having to talk to the mean girls.
I remember when this amazing teacher read one of the poems I had written after I had read one of the books she had assigned us. She right after reading it, asked me if she could use it in one of our tests - it would be on the cover of the test. I asked her to say the author was unknown. The day we all received the test I had the biggest smile in my face and one of the mean girls looked at me and she got upset. Perhaps she knew it was mine. Regardless, I was happy someone believed in me and pushed me to write. I wrote in the school contest and read one of my poems in front of many people and it received many comments.
