Explaining the importance of a higher education to a second grader by Litzy - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

Any teenager in high school knows that a higher education is an important factor in order to succeed in life, but kids, such as second graders, may not know. It is essential that second graders are aware of the importances of attending college. If I had to explain to them the benefits of continued learning I would say that it is important because you are offered better opportunities, you are given the chance to learn more about life skills and yourself, and you become more independent.

I would first inform them that in order to get a high paying job, a college degree is essential. With a college degree you will be more eligible for a certain job position rather than someone who just has a high school diploma. Not only will you be more eligible, but you would receive better promotions and may even get a raise. Certain careers also require a higher education such as doctors, surgeons, teachers, and lawyers. For this reason it is vital attending a university.

I would also explain to them that in college you also learn about life and not just about school. Attending college gives you the opportunity to meet new people and learn about their culture and their life experience. You also will improve your social and communication skills. College can be a great life experience and may even change you. You are going to be able to discover and learn more about yourself such as your likes and dislikes, beliefs and who you want to be in life.

Finally, I would explain that one of the many benefits of going to college is that you become more independent. Attending a university helps you become self-reliant, whether you go away for college and stay near home. You will get new responsibilities such as attending classes, taking care of yourself and learning to manage your time. College is a great time for you do grow mentally and learn how to handle all that life has to offer you.

In conclusion, I believe that college is very important and is the key to success. If I had to explain to a second grader why a higher education is vital I would say that it is important because it will offer you better opportunities, teaches you new skills, and helps you grow independently.
