Teamwork and Growth Through Diversity in Perspectives by Linsey - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

My high school journey as a top-achieving student at North Greenville College was as challenging as it was rewarding. Whether excelling academically in Math and English subjects or spearheading the coaching of younger volleyball players, every facet of my experience shaped me into the person I am today. One particularly significant event stands out, where I had to work closely with someone with significantly different perspectives than my own.

Aside from studying for a major in Sports Management, I've always had a passion for volleyball. In many ways, this passion transcended the mere thrill of engaging in the sport. It extended to training, nurturing, and supporting younger athletes striving to find their grounding in this game.

I recall when Mary, a talented, enthusiastic, and very fresh newbie volleyball player, joined our team. Despite her talent, she struggled with consistent accuracy. Her approach to the specific drill techniques was starkly different from my own and, in many ways, unfamiliar to the rest of the team. In her eyes, she was correct and everyone else was wrong. My task was to establish neutrality, understand Mary's perspective, and ultimately find a common ground.

Initially, this was quite a daunting task. Our differences were not restricted to just volleyball techniques but extended to our worldviews, learning styles, and personalities. However, I committed to guiding Mary towards not just becoming a better player but also growing as a person. We engaged in countless heart-to-heart, honest conversations, slowly building a mutual trust and relationship. As this unfolded, I discovered that beyond just being coachable, Mary was also a pillar of resilience and perseverance. Her determination complimented my relentless belief in pushing forward, solidifying our bond.

My experience with Mary significantly contributed to my growth not just as a team player or coach but also as an individual. It forced me to re-evaluate my own perspectives, coaching methods, and communication strategies. In this process, I had to continuously adapt and modify my methods to foster an inclusive environment that accommodated Mary's different outlook on volleyball and life in general. Moreover, the experience taught me how to effectively communicate across different perspectives, which is an essential skill in fostering a diverse and inclusive community.

Beyond the volleyball court, I have had the privilege of also tutoring my peers struggling in Math and English. Admittedly, it could be challenging trying to understand how someone could fail to comprehend concepts that I found category. Through continuous practice and patience, I helped my classmates overcome their doubts and bolstered their self-confidence. This experience reiterated the power of courage, determination, and the effectiveness of continuous and relentless efforts in overcoming difficulties.

In retrospect, these experiences were instrumental in honing my leadership skills and shaping my character. My experiences with Mary and my classmates solidified my belief in the power of resilience and hard work. I transformed these differences into
stepping stones that ultimately fostered mutual growth.

As a rising college freshman, I bring these experiences and lessons with me. The evolution I underwent in my high school years prepared me to face the forthcoming challenges with grace, resilience, and an inclusive mindset. At the heart of whatever I engage in, whether sports management or academics, I constantly strive to propagate the same spirit of open-mindedness, resilience, and mutual respect that I have learned to value.Indeed, my experiences have confirmed that the core of success lies in being able to and willing to ask for help and to continuously challenge one's boundaries.

Thus, the opportunity of working closely with people of different perspectives has endowed me with a genuine sensitivity to diversity. This openness to diversity was a payoff of the collaborative efforts of various individuals that allowed me to learn, unlearn, and relearn, an experience I believe also qualifies me well for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest.
