Mandatory Study Abroad Programs by Lindzy - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

In the present day and age, the Internet provides a diverse look into the array of countries around the world. However, the Internet is incapable of providing the vast pool of knowledge and personal experience that comes with studying abroad. The opportunity for a college student to study abroad should be mandatory and highly enforced. Upon return, the student will have an irreplaceable understanding of the culture they were immersed in, as well as increased knowledge on the topic of their study. With the proper funding and programs, I truly believe that all college students should be required to study abroad.
Every country, state, and city has a different viewpoint of the world. Whether this pertains to religion, hospitality, or teaching philosophies, there is always going to be a different way to look at things. When a student studies abroad, he or she is required to be immersed in their culture. As the student delves into their food and way of life, a greater understanding of the world will develop. Previously uncultured, the student has now experienced the real world. This acquired knowledge can be utilized in their practice to help better society. Aside from cultural experiences, 84% of study abroad students felt their studies abroad helped them build valuable skills for the job market. This is a vital asset to have because the job market is growing increasingly competitive, and employers look for a well-rounded individual. Exposure to a second language will also score some points for a job interview!
In every area of study, there are multiple approaches to build the desired result. If a university heavily enforces one way to solve a problem, the others ways will lie dormant. In order to get the maximum amount of knowledge on your specialty, studying abroad is necessary. The worldly institutions will expose students to new and diverse techniques and information that was not previously available. Therefore, students who study abroad will be capable of solving problems that other students did not have the means to use. According to the University of California, 25% of students who studied abroad had higher starting salaries than those who didn’t. In the long run, a sundry pool of knowledge will pay off.
In conclusion, studying abroad will enhance students’ knowledge and cultural diversity. While evaluating the benefits of the program, all students should be required to study abroad because of its lasting effects on the individual and society.
