It's Okay To Change Your Mind by Lindsey - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

I’ve always been reluctant to answer a question like this. You’re told to not look into the past, but to live in the present. I’ve always seen looking into the past as a form of not being content with where you are currently. This prompt has given me the opportunity to reflect on how I really feel about this topic. And I have since learned that it is okay to acknowledge and revisit the past as a way to help you better your future. If I could give my past self one piece of advice, it would be that it is ok to change your mind. It had always been a dream of mine to help others and create a positive footprint in my community, and at the time, I thought that becoming a pediatrician was the best way to do so. My desire to become a doctor inspired me to create an afterschool STEM program. I created it as not only a way for me to share my love for science, but also as a response to the gender gap in STEM by providing elementary school girls with fun and educational hands-on experiments. It wasn’t until midway through my first semester at college when I sat in my Consumer Psychology lecture, that I truly realized I wanted to pursue business. During a particularly memorable lecture. I remember being so nervous to tell my parents about my future career change, as they all knew I was set on becoming a doctor. Hearing someone say that it is ok to change your plans would’ve relieved so much needed stress and aided my anxiety about the whole situation.
