Moving Schools: Facing Adversity by Lindsey - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
I have had many experiences in my life that have provided me with struggles and difficulties. The most prime example for me in my life is the period between the start of my 9th grade year through the beginning of my 10th grade year. I was at the top of my class academically, and because of this I was deeply bullied and struggled to find a friend group that found deep passion within the same morals and beliefs that I did. The school was failing academically, and students never tried. Kids were more focused on other activities that were getting between them and their academics. I had to separate myself from my very best friends, because of their participation in these illicit activities and behaviors that were against my core values.
While at the same time, I was also made fun of by a group of boys who degraded my looks, speech, and beliefs. I faced this with confidence, and this experience really taught me to love myself and who I am. It has sparked a deep passion for standing up for others and helping those in need. Because of this situation it encouraged me to have the courage I had been struggling to find, and make the choice that I had been pondering on for nearly a year. The choice I had to make, was leave everything I has ever known and move 30 mins south to attend a new high school or stay and struggle with everything I had ever known. I am so proud that I had faith and made the change in my life to come to Alter. I have used this experience to develop a passion for helping those in need and being a source of love and happiness to not only my friends and family, but for those who don’t have one.
I think that making this choice was one pf the best things academically I could have done, because it took me to a more competitive school that I wasn't made fun of at for "trying" hard in school. I'm so thankful and proud that I made the jump.
