Describe one volunteer experience you've had, as well as what it taught you by Lindsey - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

One volunteer experience I had that was memorable and I will never forget was in 2016. I had just bought a brand new lawn mower and I could not wait to get my grass manicured and looking good. I was so excited to mow my grass that I decided to mow my neighbor's grass as well. I soon realized that there was an elderly lady that lived a few doors down and had grass over flowing threw her fence. She saw me mowing her neighbor’s grass who was mentally handicapped. Shen then, opened her door and asked me to come over. Her name was Edna and she had received a letter from the county stating she would be fined $165.00 if she didn't get her grass mowed. She asked if I would help her for $15.00. I decided to mow her grass for no fee. After I mowed Edna’s grass I felt like a great person and wondered how many more elderly people like Edna needed help.
I decided to go around my entire neighborhood with my nine year old son August. We asked the elderly neighbors if they would like their yards cut. We ended up with thirteen yards that summer and fall. I decided to continue this good deed the next couple years. This year, we have seven yards to cut. I have lost a few people through death and moving. Overall, this experience has taught me the value of the small things. One small action can change a person's entire day. I enjoyed sitting with Edna sipping lemonade and hearing her stories. She was a great lady who unfortunately passed away this past September. Edna’s need for small conversations and the fact that she was so humble made me realize that life is too short. My son also learned the meaning of giving and hard work. Get up, Get out, and Give!
