College Professor by Lindsey - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

History is a somewhat new interest for me. In January of 2016, I found the musical Hamilton. I became deeply enamored with it and all that came with it. I read biographies, non-fiction books, historical fiction books, anything about the American Revolution I became interested in. I know more than probably my history teachers about some things. In high school, I was known for loving the American Revolution. My teachers would show me books and pictures they thought I'd like. I would love to teach History if I was a college professor, and hopefully I may do that when I graduate.
I think that I would use the musical in the curriculum, and that it would probably leave a better impression on the students than just a lecture would. When talking about cabinet meetings, I could use Cabinet Battle #1 or #2 to show the students an example. I feel like the music will make the history feel more close to them, like it’s not just words on a page or screen. Being able to witness it or a reenactment of it may make the student more aware that it was a thing that actually happened, instead of a story on a page. History is such an undermined subject because people only think about memorizing dates. It’s what made the world the way it is today.
