Dinner with the Top Hat Man by Lindsay - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
For some odd and unknown reason, I have always had a slight obsession with Abraham Lincoln. I remember as a child going to the library and checking on biographies on him every time I made the trip and reading from cover to cover. As an eighteen year old, I still to this day collect pennies. This obsession grew throughout my elementary years due to the studies and projects we did in history class. I would have to say if I ever had the opportunity to sit down and have a meal with any historical figure; it would have to be Mr. Abraham Lincoln without a doubt.
I believe the liking of this man stemmed from the fact that he was called “honest Abe.” As a child, every adult praises you for speaking the truth, so why not be inspired by the most honest of them all? But I was also drawn to his rebelish childhood. I continuously was told by teachers about a story about his childhood. I only remember pieces of it now, but it went something along the lines of somehow he managed to get muddy footprints on the ceiling of his mother’s house. Now if that’s true or not, I cannot say, but I was fascinated by this silly side of someone that is so respected.
I also am a huge activist for equal rights. I do not care whether you are black or white or yellow or red or polka dotted, we are all people. I feel like I share that quality with Abe, and I felt that way for a long time. I never felt like I should treat anyone differently, despite the fact that they are different in comparison to me. I admired that quality and I felt like I matched Abraham Lincoln morally from a very young age.
With all this being said, and with a lot of people to consider on whom to share a meal with, I would have to choose the one and only Abraham Lincoln to split the dinner bill with.
