My Idea of Ideal by Lindsay - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

A perfect classroom environment is hard to come by in a college setting. Between the monotone droning of a professor, frantic typing of students, the endless chatter and the obnoxious happenings from the neighboring class, adequate retention or even attention are at times impossible. Visual learners and those prone to wandering minds are left ill-fated.

So what would an ideal classroom look like? An ideal classroom would be spacious, quiet and lightly speckled with attentive students. Crowded rooms just beg for students to whisper among themselves. The professor would be well educated and excited about the subject they teach, yet humbled by the questions that highlight the limitations of their knowledge. The lessening of distractions and the vitality of a learned professor will grasp attention and keep everyone engaged in the lecture.

The format of the class although, will be similar to those I have experienced in the past. A class without visual aids is like Thanksgiving without turkey, it just does not make sense. Therefore visual aids to compliment the lecture will never be absent. In addition, video clips and debates will also be employed to help keep the students not only attentive, but drive their ambition and initiative to continue striving for excellence. Instructors must also avoid lengthiness. After over an hour of lecturing, even the most enthusiastic teachers struggle to keep students from snoozing.

Sadly, the perfect environment for learning is hardly ever the case. Thankfully, I have the knowledge and know- how to be successful in every environment I have encountered thus far. And no matter how unenthused the professor, how distracting my fellow students, or how long the professor may decide to instruct, I will continue to excel and reach my goal of becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practioner.
