My Ambitions by Lilyan - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
In a society such as the United States, learning about the complex functions within the country can benefit the majority. There are countless responsibilities and sides to society that work intricately. However, I strive to understand society, adopt the studies, and apply my knowledge. As a to-be sociology major student, I believe I have the ability to transform several lives.
I decided to major in sociology because I’m extremely passionate about social issues and people. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always known that I wanted to help others in one way or another. After engaging in a few shows about law, crime, and justice systems, that desire grew. From that moment onward, I realized that I wanted to contribute to society, and I aspire to take actions that benefit the general public.
Currently, I am keeping my career options open, but my choices involve being of service to others. Some jobs I am considering are related to social work. To elaborate, I have been increasingly interested in child protective services and child advocation. As I’ve mentioned earlier, social issues are important to me. Having taken a few sociology courses and watching documentaries, I’m exposed to challenging topics and problems in society—one of them being child abuse and neglect. Kids, especially those under the age of five, are in their most crucial period of development, but there are cases where they aren’t properly cared for. Children are the leaders of the next generation, and they need to be protected. Without a doubt, every child deserves to be loved and have opportunities. There are numerous responsibilities of an advocate, and they do work with children on occasion. Being a child advocate allows me to support adolescents one at a time, but the number of children who receive aid can increase overtime. Although this job assists others on a smaller and personal scale, I am confident that it will bring good to the children in my community.
Additionally, another position I’ve been considering involves policy analysis. What a policy analyst does is identify a social problem, discover the causes, and offer solutions. This can benefit the society immensely, which is the usual intent. Analysts target concerns such as immigration, healthcare, human rights, and a variety of other social issues. Furthermore, with an advancing society, there will be more emerging issues. Being a policy analyst grants me the ability to research new or recurring topics and enact propositions. By helping people on either a local, state, or federal level, I can contribute to raising societal well-being. Three particular concerns I want to tackle are the criminal justice system, homelessness, and child abuse. In the future, I seek to work for an organization that keeps the health of the people in mind. With strong skills in my major, I am committed to improving and creating serviceable policies.
In conclusion, I aim to be educated on the structuring of society. In doing so, I can have a better approach towards specific issues. To a smaller extent, I am driven to help my Minnesotan community and those in need with my major. On the other hand, my biggest ambition is to bring positive altercations to the United States. I desire to be a person who improves the lives of others; I want to be an enabler of change. Though it might be idealistic, I’m determined to work diligently to make my goals happen.
