A Motivative Friend by Lily - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my entire high school career, I have made myself many friends, each with different perspectives and personality. They teach me their ways of thinking and how to approach different situations and issues.
However, a friend - who was a mutual friend and we met in Freshman year but never got close or talked that much to - is my mentor and life changer now because of her unique and mature mindset, which impresses me over and over again. Usually, in high school, students would only take the AP exam if they take the course in school. Then, one day I told that friend of mine that I want to take AP Psychology and get the credit too but I cannot fit the class into my schedule so I have to give it up. She then gave me advice, so blunt but so is true. “Self study!”, she suggested with her eyes wide open questioning why I asked such a random but simple question, in her opinion. I then defended my point saying that I do not have enough time to do it, she then argued that it is doable - proceeded on to explain how, “You can do it during the lunch time, use Khan Academy, YouTube, and many resources online. You can also do it at home if you take a shorter time to take a shower, eat, and anything else that consumes a huge amount of your time.” My mouth went… shut! I was in a frozen state where speechlessness was the only protest I could do at that point.
That said, thanks to that moment, I was able to realize what a good and motivative friend I have made for myself, and how striving and devoted my friend is to her own life and future, as well as her friends’. She taught me a lesson that no one had ever told me previously. An obstacle is not something that hinders you from your own goals and dreams, it is the element that completes your missing puzzle and the piece that allows you to improve yourself everyday. Lagging off behind is not a fact, it is a choice you make because no effort is done.
