The Gemini Defect: How the inability to make decisions impacts educational progress by Lily - February 2023 Scholarship Essay

The paralysis of choice, or the illusion, holds students hostage throughout their education. How should I study? What should I study? Which class should I take? What college should I apply to? Questions with incredibly personal, subjective answers. No google search or teacher could ever truly answer them. Students must do this for themselves.
Students must learn to be decisive at the early stages in their education. Without developing this skill, students cannot advocate on their own behalf. If they are unable to identify what it is that they do want or need, they will be unable to speak up when something is wrong, or when they need help. Indecisiveness also can lead students towards other bad habits: procrastination, and isolation. If students cannot make decisions for themselves- no matter how big or small- their situations can become overwhelming. Then, they will attempt to avoid these feelings of consumption, and push over making the decision until the last possible moment. This will only make their paralysis all the more severe.
If students are able to make strong choices for themselves in a timely manner they will emerge as leaders amongst their peers. The ability to act under pressure and respond in time is an incredibly valuable skill to have for working in groups, test taking, and preparing for their futures. Children must be well versed in the decision making process to ensure they can succeed in the future. They must be able to think critically; they must be able to weigh the pros and cons of a situation; they must be able to see the bigger picture when coming to a conclusion. If children are taught these things, if they are taught how to make good choices for themselves, then they can go on to have successful educational careers.
To make good choices you must think not only of yourself but those who will be directly and indirectly affected by your choice, you must not be embarrassed to ask for help when needed, and you must be able to evaluate your situation critically. If students are able to do these things, they will be better students and better people.
