The Expressions Club by Lily - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I were to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would create a club called the Expressions club. In this club, people would be allowed to express themselves in whatever way helps them. This club would be very diverse and would likely involve multiple facets.
For example, the first of these hypothetical facets would be the ability and freedom to vent frustrations, stress, and hurt in a way that would be beneficial to the one experiencing those negative feelings. The club would provide pillows and stress balls that someone who might need to physically take out their frustrations on something could use to get out those emotions in a non-harmful way. Other members of the club would also be available if someone needed to talk about things that were overwhelming them, and help encourage them and give advice.
The second aspect of this club would be the ability to express oneself creatively. For instance, the club would provide art materials such as canvases, paint, drawing pencils and erasers, pottery clay, and random items that could be used for abstract art. The members of this club could use these items to express themselves artistically, relieve stress, and get their imagination flowing for academic purposes if they needed some inspiration. If the club was not given any sort of monetary donation to begin with to buy the artistic materials, members could bring some of their past artwork and sell it as a fundraiser for the club.
The last aspect of this club would be the ability to express oneself verbally. There are a lot of disagreements in today’s society and this aspect would allow people of contrasting opinions and backgrounds (i.e. members of the LGBTQ+ community, people of different cultures and ethnicities, people who believe in different religions, etc.) to discuss their thoughts and opinions in a calm way that is helpful to both parties. This aspect of the club, though perhaps controversial, could help teens talk about their beliefs with others and come to an agreement or at least an understanding that keeps them from harboring resentment towards each other.
If this club were to exist, I hope and believe that it would be beneficial to all involved. This club’s sole purpose would be to be helpful to the members in multiple ways. I hope that someday this club can become a reality. Until then, I will purpose to create this club with my own friends and family.
