The Girl on Fire by Lily - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

One of my favorite books I have read this year has been “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and it has the most influential character Katniss Everdeen in it. Although many people see a romantic/adventurous story, the reason why I admire Katniss is because of the sacrifices she makes for her younger sister. While reading this book I thought about my older sister and everything she has done for me.

It is not only the fact that she practically sacrifices her life to save her sister that makes her such a strong female character, but that even when the odds are not so much in her favor she tries her hardest, because of the promise she made to her sister. I do not so much admire Katniss as a strong character, but rather I admire the bond she shares with her sister. Having a sister of my own reading the book made me question to what extent I would go for my sister.

Katniss has influenced me to develop a better relationship with my sister so that whenever I needed her she would be there and vice versa. Even in times of hardship I think of Katniss and what she sacrificed for her sister and it helps me appreciate that my sister and I do not have the pressures and worries that Katniss and Primrose had to face. I love my sister indefinitely and because of Katniss I value my relationship with my sister more.
