The Qualities a Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Should Have by Lilly - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

President John F. Kennedy once said, "Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures." This is such an important quote that all people should know because it truly embodies the whole purpose of a Nobel. One who qualifies for a Nobel should have shown actions of nonviolence and promoted peace. The qualities a recipient for a Nobel Peace Prize should be honesty and compassion.

Honesty is such an important quality because it shows truthfulness. If one can be shown to be truthful, it shows that they are able to be trusted because there is no barriers to hide anything. Someone who is dishonest cannot be trusted in truly caring for the peace of the world. For example, Lance Armstrong; Tour de France biker, who infamously cheated his way to winning, cannot be trusted to compete again because of his lack of honesty. Once considered a liar will label someone a liar for the rest of their life. Honesty is the best characteristic for a Nobel Peace Prize winner because it ensures that there is no secrets being hidden.

Having compassion is a great quality to have because it expresses the caring for others. This recipient should not only have the compassion for one, but for all groups of people. Compassion includes they care for the future of humanity. For example, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN); 2017 Nobel winner, focused its agenda to prohibit the use of nuclear warfare. Michael Birnbaum stated in his Washington Post article that their program has pushed a treaty for countries to "Be banned from developing, testing and possessing nuclear weapons, as well as threatening to use them". It's necessary to know that ICAN had the focus on the entire worlds safety in regards to nuclear weapons. They know the catastrophic effects of not only the use of these weapons, but the making of them too. Its true that they show the true definition of compassion. Compassion to others is a great skill to have in order to become a Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

There are many important qualities to have to win a Nobel, but the most important two are honesty and compassion. These two qualities truly embrace the whole purpose of the Nobel, to promote peace around the world in hopes of creating a more peaceful humanity everywhere.
