My Crazy Study Technique. by Lilly - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

The way I study is unique to say the least. It took me through middle school all the way to the end of highschool to realize what helps me when studying. I've tried every technique out there, notecards, flashcards, writing things over and over again, saying them out loud and anything else you can think of! It was only a suggestion from my father which led me to this studying technique.

My family is very music oriented so when my father made his suggestion I had a "duh" moment. He suggested I make a song of the information. Now I've been singing since I could talk and this was the perfect solution for me. I have saved countless hours of studying by making a song out of information.

Since I have practiced this technique, I have also added little dances and hand motions (I can tell you every stage of mitosis using my hands). As long as you don't make them too noticeable and reassure your teacher or professor that you aren't cheating it is also a great technique to use.

This technique may not work for everyone but it works for me and my musical brain. My only two stipulations when using this technique is like I previously said to reassure your teacher you aren't cheating and to make sure you sing the song in your head! :)
