Why Is College Important To Me by Lillie - November 2023 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I can remember my parents have instilled in me the importance of getting good grades so that I can have my choice of which college I wanted to earn my degree from. Also, by earning a college degree I would be able to secure an excellent job with good benefits and a salary to take care of myself and my family. As both of my parents graduated from college, Texas A&M University, I was able to see firsthand why college is important by the life I have been able to live and experience.
As I entered the ninth grade family and friends began to ask which college I wanted to attend and/or which profession I plan to enter. I have an older sister who was going into the twelfth grade and had already decided she was majoring in Biology while playing college volleyball then later planning to attend nursing school. I knew I wanted to attend college as well, which was solidified every year when our high school counselors would host college day and invite college representatives from around the state to speak with students during the one-day event.
College is important to me because it will help me prepare for my future as I plan to use my Environmental Science degree to gain employment in the Oil & Gas industry. As I will have assignment deadlines for each class that need to be met, I anticipate having project deadlines for work as well. In high school it’s important to be disciplined and have good-time management balancing the rigors of school and extracurricular activities, like band and volunteer groups. I am sure these attributes will be needed in college where I can hone these skills better in preparation for the workforce and life after graduation.
Also, college will allow me to broaden my horizons and interact with many diverse backgrounds gaining perspectives and viewpoints to better understand people who are different than me. This will help me to continue improving my confidence and communication skills that will be important both personally and professionally. It will also help me build new relationships whether it is with my academic advisor making sure that I am taking the classes to be on track to graduate. Or my classmates who I will interact with for group assignments or class discussions that I may work with at the same company or industry building my professional network.
Finally, having a college degree will help me secure my dream job thus increasing my earning potential as college graduates typically earn more leading to financial stability for me and my family. While my parents have provided me with this type of stability, I would also like to provide this for my family as well. I want to build the home of my dreams and purchase the vehicle of my choice with no limitations. I also plan to invest in my future by earning a master’s degree boosting my potential to land the job of my choice.
