Helping Hand by Lillian - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
My New Year’s resolution is to lend a helping hand to my friends and fellow students in my classes. This past semester I did not excel as I thought I would in my math class. I left all of the pressure on myself to study and do well on the tests. Upon receiving my final grade I realized I needed help understanding the new material. I have always understood math without any extra assistance outside of class. My first semester in college made me realize that this will no longer be the case. With this new knowledge I want to set out to help other students in the same situation as me.
Therefore, in order to fulfill my resolution I will spend less time studying in my room and more time studying in the study center. In the study center I will not only receive assistance with my work, but I will also help other students in classes that I have already taken. I will also attend office hours with my professors so that I can have a more comprehensive understanding of the lessons given in lecture. I hope that by going to my professors outside of class and working with them I will have a better understanding of the material so that I can assist other students who are also struggling. I feel that I am in a good position to help others because I understand what they are going through. In my first semester I believed that I did not need help from others in order to succeed, which is why I refused to seek help outside of class. Now that I have experienced barely passing a course, I believe I can help others who are in the same predicament. I also believe that students will not have a hard time asking me for help seeing I am their peer. I have always struggled with feeling inadequate if I have to ask the professor questions, and I know other students go through this as well. I hope that with my New Year’s resolution I will be able to create a bridge between the professor and the students that are struggling but won’t ask for help.
