My Perspective, My Reasoning by Liliana - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
It is proven by The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that an average student will attend school for 8,093 hours in a nine-year time period without counting high school. Four years can change your life immensely. In my case, high school certainly changed my perspective on everything. All of this was done to prepare me for this moment, getting into college.
The beginning of everything goes back to 2006 when Ibeth Gonzalez gave birth to me. My parents were aware of the poor conditions my education would have if it were to be pursued in Sonora, Mexico. Therefore, they agreed for my grandmother to become my legal guardian. Even though our financial income was low, it was enough. All my life, my grandmother was the one who attended my Honor Roll Ceremonies throughout elementary and middle school. Exceeding in school is a responsibility I put on myself since no one at home could speak English apart from my two older brothers who also had their businesses to worry about. I became a student at Douglas High School in August of 2020, a year that impacted everybody. Learning online was a challenge since I wasn’t used to it. However, I learned from my mistakes and became a better and more mature version of myself in my junior year of high school. My academic scores and attendance were something I was proud of once again. After gaining control once again of my academic success, I decided to be more involved with my school. Joining extracurricular activities has been by far the most life-changing decision I have made. They allowed me to expand my horizons and meet new places with new people. Currently, I am vice president of the clubs DECA and Skills USA for the computer maintenance chapter of my school. Not only that, but also secretary of the Kiwanis Key Club, a club based on community service. Previously, I was a member of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), but the expenses became too high for me to cover. With this stated, it leads to the reason why I am writing this.
This scholarship is one of the methods I believe could help me pursue my education with less preoccupation for my grandmother and myself. The least I want is for college to become a burden instead of a dream come true. I am grateful for the 8,093 hours of education I’ve had up to this point, but I’m seeking more. Hopefully, with your scholarship, I will be able to put to test the discipline and responsibility I have worked so hard for. All for the final goal to earn a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology. Something my past mistakes have taught me is that if I truly want it, i´ll get it done. This is the main reason why the choice of pharmacology has been made. It does not matter where I come from or how low my level of finance is, when I’m in a hospital working, my problems become microscopic compared to whoever is picking up medication.
