The Teacher Who Changed My View on Education by Liberty - October 2019 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my entire schooling career, I was never one to put my one hundred percent effort into school. I was never a bad student by any means. I got grades that my parents were proud of and I always got my work done, but I just felt like school was something that I had to do. It was just a mandatory place that I had to be. I have always felt that way until I met Ms. T-L my senior year.

Ms. T-L was my advanced composition and research teacher. Her class started like any other class for me. Just something that I was doing to graduate. I do not know what I did to make her see this, but she saw a spark in me. She wanted to challenge me. I did not care for the challenges she wanted me to do. At that point, I was considering not doing any of it. But she did something that no other teacher had done for me before. She would have conversations with me and discussions about issues about the world, even though I was a shy kid who did not speak much during class. Ms. T-L truly cared. She would always ask how I was doing, and she always had a smile on her face.

Knowing that she cared for me had changed my view of her class. I wanted to challenge myself because I knew that she would help me every step of the way and wanted to help me and all of her other students in any way she could. It was not that none of my other teachers didn't care about me. It was the fact that she showed it and made sure that all of her students knew that she was always available for them.

Now coming into college, I am majoring in elementary education with a special education minor. I want to help kids and help them learn the way Ms. T-L helped me learn and grow, not just as a student, but as a whole person. If I could do that for other students who have had the mindset as I did, then I would know I have done Ms. T-L well.
