Becoming a Nurse Anesthetist by Libby - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

I personally have always been interested in nursing. Where most young kids would say a vet, a pop star, or even a firefighter as their dream job, I said a nurse. At first, my only reason to become a nurse was just to help people, but as I got older, my reasons became vaster and more emotional with each new experience I had.
When I was 12, I witnessed a good friend of mine get hit by a bus. Watching adults jump out of their cars, trying to give my friend CPR while I just stood there feeling helpless is a feeling I’m all too familiar with. A couple months later I would witness another friend of mine’s grandpa pass away, again, having to stand there, waiting, knowing there was absolutely nothing I could do because not only did I not have the knowledge, I emotionally couldn’t handle myself enough to save someone even if I tried. Since those experiences, I knew that I would never allow myself to go through those situations again without the proper information to possibly save a life.
Throughout my high school career, I’ve become CPR certified, learned different safety precautions with different scenarios, and have passed various classes that center around nursing. The classes I have passed for example are: Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, chemistry, and am currently getting through my sports medicine courses. With taking those classes as well, I’ve become more passionate and certain that I want to go into nursing. With the help of people, I know in the medical department, I have chosen to become a CRNA. Some reasons I have chosen to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist other than obviously wanting to help people, is the experience as well being able to support myself and my future with whatever could happen financially. With the years of schooling and programs and starting out as an RN I will develop lots of hands on experience, and with going into the CRNA program I will have enough knowledge, help, and experience to feel confident in my abilities and my passion as a Nurse Anesthetist.
Plenty of people tried to discourage me because of the amount of learning and school I will have to endure, but if anything, it encourages me more because I will be going into my career path. Knowing that I worked hard for my job and that I love it enough to want to do it for years and years to come is such a rewarding feeling that everyone should experience in their life. My overall vision of myself is one of confidence, experience, and ability so I will never feel helpless in times of need again.
