Dinner with the President by Liam - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with one U.S. President, it would be with the late President John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy not only demonstrated great leadership during his short time in office but he was ahead of his time. The thing I admired most about him was how he stood up for what he believed was right no matter what anyone thought. His speeches were inspiring, candid, and powerful even to this day. His assassination was an act of cowardice and for some an act of silence. His death prevented him from continuing to shed light on the truths about our country and the men in power who ran it and a hope for a better future.
I would take advantage of this momentous dinner by asking President Kennedy these questions: “Would you have changed anything during your presidency if you had known for a fact that making those public speeches and trying to make a real change would endanger your life?.” What or who gave you the courage and inspiration to stand up for what you believed to be true and just?” I want to believe that he would not have changed anything. I would also seek his advice on what our generation can do to safeguard our rights and our future.
Since his presidency, we have seen challenging times and we continue to do so even today. I feel insecure in the direction this country is headed. I feel it is vital to promote change and it is our generation that can make that happen. I hope to do my part as I continue with my education and long after, to instill hope and promote change within my school, community, and beyond without any fear of the repercussions.
