Educating young learners in health by Lexxi - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If given the choice to select an academic subject to teach, I would choose a health course. My passionate interest for the subject and belief in its importance will drive me to work with diligence and dedication; a class with an instructor that genuinely enjoys the topic is more likely to learn the information well.
Students should be well educated about their body and health. The ability to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy behaviors, as well as the consequences of both, are important skills that young people must know.
Last year, I took Health 3 as an elective course. My instructor, Mrs. Hurst was fantastic at her position. Her dedication to teaching the subject inspired me to work harder and learn more. One of her subjects in the course was “Healthy Relationships”. In it, she provided us with packets on the dynamics of couples in relationships. I was so intrigued I kept the packets -- I felt it was great advice that others should learn, too.
Health is an expansive subject. Knowing this, I would have a limited amount of time to teach each topic; we would have work diligently, yet enjoyably. But a particular topic that I would like to focus on would be the bonds between students and their peers, parents, and teachers. I believe a healthy connection between the people in your life is a largely important touchstone. I would attempt to make the lessons relatable so that the students can connect the subject with themselves and their personal lives -- as I did during my health course. A teaching method that associates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning, accompanied by a dedicated and passionate instructor, will better include and motivate the students involved, which promote healthy and enthusiastic learning.
My desire to help students learn a large array of topics on health is a result of the inspiration I have from Mrs. Hurst; she gave a new perspective and interest on the topic, and if I had the opportunity, I would love to teach and inspire others just as I was.
