Service. Helping those around me creates a joy within my soul that cannot be paralleled. To see the relief of a burden being lifted from someone’s shoulders gives me the satisfaction of time well spent. We are an extremely social species. We depend on each other for nourishment, mental health, interaction, laughter, and a myriad of other opportunities that encompass the human experience. Knowing this drives people around the world to look beyond themselves and manifest the astounding capabilities of the human race. I personally regain my faith in humanity when I hear the tales of selfless sacrifice for another being.
Coming to college has been an enlightening experience. As I have struggled to decide how I want to spend my precious and limited time on this earth, I have come to know many different people with diverse backgrounds, beliefs, ambitions, dreams, and perspectives. It fascinates me that no two people are alike. How astonishing this realization is. Because of the reality that we are so incredibly unique, each one of us has something exquisite to give to society. I want to give my best to the world and leave a legacy as someone who thought about others before herself.
I have chosen to major in psychology, so I can better understand the complex inner workings of all those individual minds. I hope to become a marriage and family therapist to aid the fundamental unit of society in fulfilling their potential and reaching their goals. Listening to others struggles and being an open, nonjudgmental ear can be the only experience someone needs to pick themselves up and trudge on through the dismal and depressing trials life often throws at us. Serving those around me generates a greater purpose to my life than anything else I have experienced. This is why I have chosen to dedicate my life to comprehending as much about the human population as possible through furthering my education and attending college.
