The Power of Yearbook Quotes by Lesly - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

Senior year is one of the most crucial years of high school and life. It is the last step to be able to graduate from high school and become responsible, mature, adults. Senior students have an abundant amount of things to worry about; from applying to college, scholarships, and jobs to things that should be simple, like thinking of a yearbook quote. Senior yearbook quotes are the perfect opportunity to inspire peers who are struggling to make difficult life decisions. Inspirational yearbook quotes can inspire them during the decision making process or even change their perspective of life.
Because of the power that senior quotes can hold, I would choose a wise and motivational quote from Henry Thoreau. Last year in my AP language class, we read the book "Walden.” There were plenty of amazing ideas that Thoreau put into the book, but one specific quote stood out to me. The quote is “In the long run men only hit what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.”
To me, this quote means that you should strive to accomplish goals. No matter how difficult that goal is to achieve or how many times we have failed while trying to accomplish it, we shouldn’t give up on it. Many times when people fail, they become unmotivated and upset, but it’s okay to fail on the first try because it if is challenging, it is worth it. Failure teaches us lessons, we should listen to them to become a step closer to our goals. Nothing that is good for us comes easy, and we have to work for what we want.
This quote demonstrates the kind of person and student that I am. It shows that I am determined, diligent, and able to embrace challenges rather than take the easy route. When I set my mind to something, I am willing to put my heart, soul, and energy into it. Everything worth in life has to be worked for. Embracing challenges is what allows me to improve the kind of person that I am. By challenging myself and working hard for what I want to achieve, I can gain new abilities as well as reach self actualization.
Senior yearbook quotes contain power. The purpose of them is to make a memorable statement that assures people will remember you after high school. They can be ideas that can inspire or motivate your others to strive for their dreams and work for their goals and that is why I would choose the quote by Henry Thoreau. This quote inspires me to be determined and work for what I want, and I would like to inspire others through it.
