From Biologist to Lobbyist: What Attending Law School Means to Me. by Lena - June 2013 Scholarship Essay
I have previously attended Boston University to receive my Bachelors degree in Biology, so I have adapted this question to “What does attending law school mean to you?”.
Not many biology majors decide to attend law school as their next step; Most attend graduate programs to facilitate their research. So it should come as no surprise to me when I am greeted with honest shock when I discuss my adventurous research in the Amazon Rainforest and Andes Mountain Range during law school admitted student days. My dream has always been to help what I am most passionate for, which is nature and the environment. I used to think that was through science, and my research would be used to benefit the future. However, I soon realized that the research already being done by scientists today have concluded what I would one day conclude myself: That there is a great need for change. I do not want my life's work to be lost in a pile of scientific journals.
Thus, my passion to support what I love drove me to move forward from science and into the world of law. I will always have an affinity for science, and my years of gaining knowledge on the subject will never leave me. I value my understanding and plan on continuing to use it, although I will not be dedicating my life to scientific research. Instead, I wish to hybridize my education in biology and my future education in law in order to truly influence policy and change. By joining my expertise in the sciences with law, I can use this unique and necessary combination to impact the environmental policy of the future. Attending law school means that I have an opportunity to unite two, seemingly unrelated, fields together, and create a path to my dreams and goals of having an impact on this world. Attending law school means I can continue to become the person I have wanted to be, and consequently, means everything to my future.
Thank you for your consideration,
