Education is Opportunity by Lena - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

To me, education means #options. When I was nine, my family and I moved to Paris, France as missionaries. I attended a French public school for two and a half years. During that time, I realized what a blessing education in America truly is. In France, the students did not have the support from their teachers like Americans do. Kindness is viewed as weakness. Every French child is responsible for themselves to survive in school and give themselves a chance at doing well as a French adult. If they don't do well in school, they have no other options.
Living in France and realizing this is how other people live made me realize how many options and opportunities we have as Americans with our education system. If someone is not doing well in an academic school setting, they can go to a trade school. If someone struggles in a subject, they can hire a tutor. There is always opportunity here to go back to school and to find support and encouragement from teachers. Many Americans take for granted the amount of opportunity that can be found in our education. We have a system that is focused on making sure everyone succeeds. We have opportunities that allow us to reach any goals we have for ourselves and to have options.
Therefore, I believe that education is opportunity. Our education in the United States gives us options. We are not stuck when we fail. We have many chances to try again and to do better. I think it is important for us to remember that education is a privilege. There are people around the world that don't have the same support that we do or that don't even have an education at all. I am thankful for my education that gives me #options.
