The word "essence" means falling in love with what is intrinsically you. My journey of expanding leadership in a space where it aligns with my marginalized identity has been essential to this understanding. However, the essence of leadership is complex due to the many colors and facets that define impactful leaders. Growing into a leader, I envisioned a space where my intrinsic values could flourish and prosper. Identifying my leadership with the environment at Howard University has been crucial to this growth.

While studying at Howard, I have learned that leadership is essentially the skill and power to guide others toward a common goal. It is not about commanding authority but about inspiring and uplifting the masses. A true leader cultivates an environment where individuals feel valued and empowered to contribute their unique strengths. This concept of leadership is rooted in effective communication, mutual respect, and fostering collaboration among diverse groups. As an upcoming junior at Howard majoring in communication studies, concentrating in public relations, I have been fortunate to witness exemplary leadership firsthand that embodies the foundational ideas of communication.

One of the most influential leaders many have grown to admire is Dr. Angela Davis. Her profound impact as an activist, scholar, and advocate for social justice extends far beyond her public persona, influencing my perception and embodiment of leadership. Dr. Davis' leadership style is characterized by her known unwavering commitment to justice, her intellectual rigor, and her ability to inspire movements that challenge the status quo.

Dr. Davis' dedication to social justice is unparalleled. She approaches her work with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that her actions and words align with her values. Her commitment to fighting systemic oppression is not just about making powerful speeches but about engaging in sustained activism and education. This dedication has taught me that effective leadership involves a relentless pursuit of equity and justice, even in the face of significant challenges.

Compassion is another hallmark of Dr. Davis' leadership. She understands the individual and collective struggles of marginalized communities, offering solidarity and support. At From Roots to Wings Early Childhood Development Center, I have worked as a daycare assistant teacher, lead teacher, and program supervisor. These roles required me to manage shifts, develop monthly schedules, and create newsletters. Leading a team of 10 employees and consulting with parents has honed my skills in managing diverse groups and fostering a collaborative environment. This role also required me to be creative with my leadership skills to inspire, stimulate, and excite my students. This experience has reinforced the importance of attentive organization, effective communication, and adaptability in leadership in spaces of youth.

Leadership is also about creating opportunities for others to succeed. As the co-CEO and founder of Letters To The System, a program focused on political engagement for youth, I implemented initiatives that reached students across counties in Miami. This program mobilizes our generation by writing questions and confronting local officials through repeated letters while creating volunteering opportunities to many teens in my community alongside powerful young women. This role required strategic planning, outreach, and the ability to inspire young people to take an active role in their communities. Similarly, founding the Black Student Union at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High provided a space for African Diaspora students to connect, learn, and grow. These experiences have underscored the importance of advocacy, inclusivity, and community engagement in leadership.
