La Meilleure Langue by Leigha - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

“Le français est la meilleure langue de le monde.” In English, “French is the best language in the world.” Some may debate this, but I would argue for it for hours.
I have been passionate about French language and culture since eighth grade year. In my middle school, we were allowed to take a foreign language our last year, and the only options were French and Spanish. Of course, the majority of kids took Spanish, saying it was more useful than French. Thankfully, I did not fall into such a trap. The rumors of the wonderful French teacher pushed me to make my decision. Her great reputation was what really drove me to try out French, and I am forever grateful because she truly turned out to be the epitome of the perfect teacher. This is mainly because she sparked in me a new passion and excitement that I did not know could exist. After struggling through the early concepts of learning a new language, something in my brain and in my heart just clicked. A love for French was embedded, and would propel me through four years of high school French classes and eventually into college.
I’m someone who loves kids, and so teaching is not that far-fetched of an idea for me. In fact, I have often debated the idea of teaching French because it seems like a good combination of two important aspects of my life: kids and language. I thrive off of knowledge and am excited about learning, but being able to share that knowledge and spark that same love I found would be a monumental experience. I believe that if you are to teach something, you should be excited about it. There needs to be a passion and a love for the information you are sharing, otherwise the whole process would be null.
The French teach I have now, is another reason I would teach the French subject. He makes everything we learn interesting, and teaches us practical things we would actually use in France. He portrays all the information in a fun way that makes me want to go to France and utilize the language. By taking part in his classes for three of my four high school years my excitement for learning French has continually increased. Just experiencing a higher level of language learning is enough in itself to choose French as a subject I would teach.
