Decoding Life’s Mysteries: My Journey into Biochemistry and Forensic Pathology by Leah - February 2025 Scholarship Essay
Biochemistry has been an interest for me, inspiring me to dive into the science of life on a molecular level. My journey began with taking Honors Chemistry and AP Biology, two classes that sparked my love for understanding the complex reactions and processes that make up living organisms. These classes fascinated me with how small molecules interact in ways that define health and disease, and ultimately life itself. The labs provided hands-on experience and allowed me to study chemical reactions and biological systems up close which only deepened my desire to pursue this subject further.
Outside of the classroom, I have continued to explore these subjects, which led me to studying biochemistry and spiked my interest in Forensic Pathology. Through my research, I discovered the academic and practical paths necessary to become one and how to succeed in this field, motivating me to work toward this goal. Watching shows like “Autopsy” and “Forensic Files” has given me insight into the real-world applications of forensic biochemistry, showing how experts use it to solve complex medical mysteries. Each case study I watch offers a glimpse into the job of a forensic pathologist, a role that involves precision, analytical skills, and a commitment to uncovering the truth.
To gain firsthand experience, I am beginning to apply for internships at local funeral homes and coroner’s offices, where I hope to observe professionals and develop practical skills in a real-world environment. This opportunity would allow me to link my academic knowledge with field experience, bringing me one step closer to my goal of becoming a forensic pathologist. My passion for biochemistry continues to drive me toward this career, that is blending my curiosity with a strong desire to make a difference in a field where science reveals answers and brings closure to people and families that seek it.
