Changing Patterns by Leah - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
When I first started college at Radford University, I was both excited and nervous. I had always dreamed of pursuing a career in healthcare, but I knew that the road ahead would not be easy. I decided to major in Pre-Nursing, with the hope of eventually working in nursing, emergency medical services, or even going further into medicine or dentistry. However, as a first-time college student, I quickly realized that the transition from high school to college was a significant challenge.
In high school, I maintained a decent GPA of 3.3, but college was a whole new ballgame. The coursework was more demanding, and I had to manage my time better than I ever had before. One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was my first semester's psychology class. The class was essential for my major, and I knew I had to do well to continue on my path.
From the beginning, I struggled to keep up with the pace of the lectures and the depth of the material. The professor covered complex topics at a speed that left me feeling overwhelmed. Despite attending class and taking detailed notes, I found myself falling behind. The first exam was a wake-up call; I did not do as well as I had hoped, and I realized I needed to change my approach.
I knew I had to overcome this challenge if I wanted to succeed in my chosen field. So, I took a step back and evaluated what I could do differently. First, I reached out to my professor for help. I was relieved to find out that my professor was supportive and willing to help. I attended office hours, where I could ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the material.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I formed a study group with a few classmates. This was a game-changer for me. Working with others allowed me to see different perspectives and learn from others struggling in the class. We quizzed each other, discussed difficult concepts, and shared study resources. It was comforting to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and together, we supported each other through the challenges.
Another strategy I adopted was improving my time management skills. In high school, I could get by with last-minute study sessions, but that approach was not working in college. I started using a planner to schedule my study sessions, breaking down the material into manageable chunks. This helped me stay organized and reduced my stress levels. I also made sure to balance my studies with breaks to avoid burnout.
Throughout this process, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. College was challenging, but I discovered that with the right strategies and support, I could overcome obstacles. By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I improved my grades significantly, and more importantly, I gained confidence in my ability to handle difficult coursework.
This experience taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my academic journey and future career in healthcare. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that collaboration can lead to success. I also realized the importance of time management and staying organized, skills that are crucial in any healthcare profession.
As I continue my studies in nursing and explore other healthcare fields, I know there will be more challenges ahead. However, I am confident that I can face them head-on with the skills and determination I have developed. This experience has strengthened my resolve to pursue a career where I can make a difference in people's lives, whether it be as a nurse, paramedic, or doctor.
In conclusion, overcoming the challenges of my psychology class was a pivotal moment in my college experience. It taught me resilience, the value of seeking help, and the power of working together with others. These lessons have prepared me for the future, and I am excited to continue my journey in the healthcare field.
