Opportunity by Leah - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Opportunity. That is the reason why attending college is not only an option, but a necessity. Attending college will provide me with numerous opportunities that are not currently available to me at home. For example, attending a university would not only allow me to meet new people, but it would allow me to become involved in various new organizations or committees which I had previously never heard of. Because my parents were first generation college students, they were able to clearly see the difference that a college education had on their life compared to the generations before them. College not only provides individuals with the education needed to be successful, but it provides students with a broader perspective and open mindedness. I believe that college is a place not only to learn, but to develop and succeed at your full potential. Being exposed to a number of new organizations, as well as people from various cultural and religious backgrounds will help me to develop new interests or hobbies, and to contribute to my university community.
In addition, college will provide me with the opportunity to learn at a level which I am not currently able to do. This is because college will allow me to learn by completing more hands on projects, conducting my own research, studying abroad in different countries, and completing internships to prepare me for my future career. Although I currently know which major I want to pursue, I am not sure what career I want to pursue within that major. Attending college would allow me to be introduced to various jobs within my desired field that I may not have previously heard of. In addition, college may result in me developing an interest in an entirely different field as well. College provides options. So many doors are open after you have obtained your college degree that weren’t previously available. This is why I want to attend college. To have more options and opportunities regarding not only what career I can pursue, but what I can become involved in to potentially make a difference at my university and surrounding community.
