My Future In Architecture by Layla - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

Around ten years old my father would take me around new housing developments and I would be fascinated with the materials they used to build homes and how they executed a build from the ground up. I would enjoy looking at the progression of homes from beginning to end. The passion of seeing this progression has shaped my career choice to become an Architect in the near future. My involvement with the National Organization of Minority Architects ignited my passion for this career even more. This experience with NOMA deepened my understanding of the architectural process and highlighted the importance of architecture. I learned about redlining in the city of Detroit and how it impacted so many lives in the Black community. By becoming a licensed architect I will be able to tackle challenges and push boundaries that can help communities. I will be able to transform, shape, and influence communities by fostering social interactions between cultures and adding environmentally friendly materials to make them sustainable as well. I can contribute to the base for cultural identity which is the framework for how we go about our daily lives. In this field, I will have the potential to construct people, personalities, ideas, and structures. It's my social responsibility to help those who need affordable and sustainable housing as everyone deserves a safe place to live. In ten years I pray I can combine my creativity from childhood and my strong sense of history through architecture. I hope to design spaces that are sustainable for the unhoused and contribute to the environment.
