Psychology in Daily Life by Layan - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed, the academic subject I would teach is psychology. Psychology is a social studies course and is defined as the study if the human mind and the way it functions. I believe psychology is an important class to take, and I would like to be the one to teach it at my high school.
Everyone will, at least one time in their lives, encounter a person that may suffer from mental illness and not know anything about what that illness is, and what they may do to help. After taking psychology, and being very interested in the subject, I have learned a lot about how the human mind works. I find it easier to identify people with mental illness and I understand and I’m able to encounter the person dealing with the illness, and lend a helping hand. I would love to teach students about these different illnesses, as they are not as understood as physical illnesses. I also would allow my students to understand how and what causes there to be these mental illnesses in general.
Psychology is not only about mental illnesses, as it is also about how different substances have different effects on the brain, as some substances may cause harm to a person’s brain. I would enjoy teaching students about what substances have positive effects on the brain, and what don’t. Substances, such as alcohol and nicotine have a negative effect, and may lead to mental illnesses as well as physical illnesses in the brain. Many students do not realize what damage they can be causing to one of the most important organs in their body, and this course will help them understand how they can keep their brain as healthy as can be.
Overall, psychology is a subject that I believe should be a requirement for all high school students, and I would definitely choose to teach it, as it teaches everyone how to keep their minds and brains healthy, and what mental illnesses are and how they are caused. But for now, I would like to remain the student and have psychology taught to me. Maybe someday I will be the one to teach this subject to many high school students who are as passionate about this subject as I am.
