My New Year's Resolution by Lauren - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

My New Year’s Resolution
When it comes to resolutions for the new year, I have found it remarkably easy to bandwagon on the backs of some rather popular ones such as those suggesting fitness or weight loss goals and others regarding financial issues. This time, however, I have chosen something much different. Although it was a week after the official first of the year, I decided where I want my focus to be finishing out my senior year and beginning college. One New Year’s resolution to help me become a better student in 2016 is simply that of perseverance.
Though freshman year starts in August, 2016 started in January and I intend to waste no time putting my resolution into practice. Even in the last semester of senior year, this new goal has hit the ground running. Speaking of the last semester, it is beginning to get difficult. With college waiting only months away, the days begin to drag and some days it takes a real effort just to get out of bed during the week. So called “senioritis” kicks in and by the time the new year rolls around, students are already smelling the sweet, sweet scent of graduation. All of these truths combined are the reason I need perseverance. It is going to take nothing less than a stong motivation only known as such to help me finish this year with flying colors.
Webster’s dictionary describes perseverance as “the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult.” While the word ‘college’ screams freedom to a restless eighteen year old, I know well that it will not be easy. There will be professors that I will not understand and nights when I will choose studying over sleeping. Having a characteristic as honorable as perseverance will give me a leg up and I will be one step ahead before I even enter freshman year because I have the confidence of knowing that although there will be difficulties, I will persevere and I will not give up.
The wonderful thing about resolutions is, if done correctly, they turn into habits. What better habit to practice than motivation? Far past the days when I obtain a high school diploma and far past the days when I earn a college degree, I can look back and feel proud knowing that I was able to overcome the crazy teachers and sleepless nights. How wonderful a feeling knowing that with perseverance, I can conquer anything – even becoming a better student in 2016.
