Stepping out of the box by Lauren - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Amerian scholar Warren Bennis once said, “The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born-that there is a genetic factor to leadership. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.” Leaders are simply bred depending on the type of environments that are presented. If someone has to continuously speak up for what he or she believes, it is likely that they will be a vocal leader. College may give a person leeway to start being vocal, or at least develop leadership qualities.
Leadership skills are necessary to be successful in college. It is important for a college student to have some type of leadership skills, or to participate in activities that can enhance leadership skills. Being able to lead does not always mean speaking up on every event, but one can be a leader by doing the right tasks, or participating in programs that may help the community. It is vital that college students have leadership qualities, because essentially college students are the future of the world. If every student can lead, instead of following behind what society may believes is the “right thing to do”, a lot of changes could be made in the world. It is difficult to believe that students can achieve a high level of success in college without exemplifying some kind of leadership.
Whether someone is leading vocally or by example, it can impact the lives of very many people. College is a way to establish, or enhance, leadership skills in today’s youth. Being able to lead is a powerful tool, and it can be the reason why a lot of students are so successful today. It is important that people are able to voice their opinion, and stand up for what they believe in. Without leadership, college students will not learn the value of their voice, and the world may never be able to evolve in the way that it should.
