Give Reading a Chance by Lauren - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

Thinking of just one book that every high school student should read is nearly an impossible task. As I sit here and think about all the books I read in high school, I can’t think of a single one that I think everyone else should read too. I believe that people should read books because they want to. Some of the books I was forced to read in high school were decent, but most of the time, I just read to get a good grade. I never really connected with a single book I read as an assignment. So instead, I’m going to write about a book series that I read in 6th grade. I believe everyone could find something to relate to in this series, which is why I would recommend it to anyone I meet. I’m talking about Harry Potter. This is a widely popular series. There are fans all across the globe. I know I’m not the only one who would recommend this book to everyone. I’m probably not even the only one writing about the series for this essay, but that has to mean something. The fact that this book has developed such a wide, and loyal fan base proves its worth something. Not only is this book an awesome adventure story of a boy constantly fighting to overcome the Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort, but it has so many themes that are relevant to people everywhere. These books deal with sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, prejudice and general ignorance. These books taught me that it doesn’t matter how you were raised, you have the option to be genuine, loyal, brave, and kind. These books taught me to hold on to what I know is right. These books taught me to stay strong through the hard times this world will throw at you. These books taught me about friendship, real friendship, and what that means. These books, unlike so much of todays pop culture, taught me that I can be a prim and proper girl, and still be independent, intelligent, and a little rebellious. These books taught me so much, and without having them in my life, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I truly believe these are books that could inspire a love of reading to anyone who gives them a chance, and everyone would get something out of reading them.

Thank you so much for this opportunity. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, and I have enjoyed sharing one of my favorite series with you. Thank you for considering me!
