The Humbled Rocks by Lauren - July 2021 Scholarship Essay

Once upon a time, there was a mountain. A substantial storm passed through the mountain with hail and strong winds, causing large pieces of the mountain to sever. The large portion of rock was free-falling thousands of feet. BOOM. The rock burst into many small pieces. There they sat until the next storm.

A rainstorm came upon the rocks that lay at the base of the mountain. The water level began to rise and carried away the rocks fragments that were light enough for the water to drag away. While carried away with the water, the rocks were struck against each other and the ground. Thus, making the rocks even more fragmented.

Once the water level was back to normal, the rock fragments still within the water fell within a river. This river had rocks large and small. The water was moving at many miles per hour. The rock fragments were battling the water and the rocks that were in the water. Thus, making the rock fragments even more fragmented.

The river dragged the rocks more and more until they reached the shore of the beach. And that is how sand comes to be. Sand is simply sediments of rocks that have traveled far away from home. It was not until I took Geology in college that I realized this.

The story of how sand comes to be is so beautiful. Everyone loves sand! Yet, we fail to realize that sand is a rock that has experienced trauma and has been humbled. In the same way, we can use our traumas and life journeys to build up to be coarse, warm, and shining bright light!
