The Empowerment of Education by Lauren - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

In kindergarten, many children are asked for the first time what they want to be when they grow up. Students’ faces light up as they shout answers such as “astronaut” and “princess”. From the moment I was first asked what I wanted to be, my answer has always has been “teacher”. As a current freshman in college, I am pursuing a career in educating young students with special needs in a socioeconomically challenged school district. By opening my eyes to the truths of the world we live in and providing me with the tools to make a difference, my education has inspired me to initiate a positive change in society in a way that aligns with my desired occupation.

From a young age, I enjoyed going to school to learn new ideas that I could apply to everyday life. This love of knowledge has manifested itself in many ways throughout my life as I have taken advantage of many opportunities to use my knowledge to benefit others. A large part of my college experience to date has revolved around community service. For an average of ten hours each week, I volunteer my time at the local College Access Center where I teach high school students and adult learners in a variety of different subject areas.

In the time I have spent thus far at the College Access Center, I have had the unique opportunity of seeing the effects of education not only on myself, but also on my students. My personal education has empowered me to use the skills I have been taught to impart the same gifts of knowledge and inspiration to others. As an aspiring special educator, it is my hope and responsibility to continue to teach my current and future students about the importance of education, as well as to empower them to do the same.
