My Future Profession by Lauren - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

At 6 years old, I dreamt of being a teacher. The idea of helping others grow and learn excited me as I had always loved my teachers. I also thought the idea of working with children would make my future adult life extremely enjoyable and fulfilling. Education had always been something my parents preached to me about and it only seemed fitting to continue education in the form of giving back. However, as I stared to get older, teaching was no long a profession that I wanted to pursue. As I continued to learn and explore, my passion for business, finance, and banking took over for my past dream of teaching. Although my parents had always preached about education, they started to encourage financial literacy and proficiency in finance as I aged.
Once my path changed, my passion for business took over for teaching. In my high school, it was a requirement to take a class on personal finance in your freshman year. This is when I really started to enjoy learning about business. I was fascinated by the different lessons about banking and the stock market. This, in addition to the financial literacy my parents taught me about, fueled my passion for what I plan on pursuing in college: business. I have continued my education and passion in the business field by taking many of the different classes that business schools in college also require. I have taken most of business classes my school offers including personal finance, AP economics, accounting, and math also used in business like calculus and statistics.
My dream job has changed since I was 6 years old, but that does not mean the factors that attract me to a career have to change. When I was younger, I loved teaching because I wanted to do something that I enjoyed. Business is the topic of study that I enjoy, so my goal of finding a career I enjoy has not changed from the age of 6. Although a finance career does not give back in the same way as teaching, that does not mean that giving back in my future profession is impossible. I plan on working with organizations like Junior Achievement USA and The Boys and Girls Clubs of America which continue to teach important life lessons like financial literacy to our youth. So even though my dream job has changed significantly since the age of 6, everything I am looking for and working towards in my future career has not changed from my young age.
