Studying Overseas; Yea or Nay? by Lauren - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
In every college or university, students get the chance to study abroad. This means that the student can go to a different country or wherever to study their major if he or she chooses to. Some believe this should be a requirement for every student. However, I beg to differ being that studying abroad requires large expenses, the student could be a caregiver, and it also causes one to feel very lonely or homesick.
Firstly, studying abroad is highly expensive. There are some students who have loads of money, but there are also some who did all they could just to get into college. These students would be required to pay heavy fees, and not everyone can do that. If it were required, students would be in debt and would hardly be able to care for themselves if at all; there’s only so much their family can pay to help. I mean, most students parents are the ones who pay for their education in the first place. Therefore, studying abroad for all college students should not be required, because heavy fees cannot be paid by every student, even with help.
Secondly, students are doing numerous things in their lives. For example, a caregiver would not be able to study abroad due to the care they are needed to give to a child or sick person. A caregiver should never be required to leave the country to study more. This student is needed in their own country, and has committed to taking care of others. If they were to leave, the student would let down numerous children, babies, or sick beings who are in need of the student’s help. For this reason, studying abroad should not be a requirement for all college students.
Lastly, studying abroad causes most students to become very homesick and experience loneliness. Although they would meet new friends, the student is very far from home, and there is no place like home. Leaving your home country should be a choice, not a requirement. If that student chooses to study abroad, that’s their choice. If they don’t choose to study abroad, but are required to, they would be encountering and experiencing things they never wanted to do in the first place, like loneliness, for example. Some accept it and can deal with it, others however don’t deal with it as well. Loneliness can lead to depression, and depression into other bad issues.
Studying abroad is a very exciting and effective way of studying. It can teach you so much, but can hurt you financially and emotionally, as well as taking you away from other commitments. It is an effective study method that should always be there as an option, but not a requirement. It is for all of these reasons, that studying abroad should not be a requirement for all college students.
