My Choice of a Subject to Teach by Laura - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed and I had to teach a subject to aspiring students, I would teach math. Math has always been my strongest subject and I genuinely enjoy learning new math skills that I will use later on in life. In many of my math classes, I would help my friends understand the content and how to solve the given problem. My friends always turned to me for help because I grasp what is taught so quickly. It is easy for me to understand and I love finding solutions to different problems.
The skills you learn in math are skills that come in handy in life. Not only did I learn how to analyze and solve problems, I learned patience. When a problem wasn’t working out correctly, instead of getting frustrated I would simply try a different method to solve the problem. I didn’t give up on the problem because it didn’t work the first time – I kept trying and trying until I figured out how to get the answer. Math is something many students take so lightly, but for me it was always my favorite class of the day. I was excited to learn new content each day.
There are other subjects I would teach if the roles were reversed – history, science. However, math is what I have the most passion for and would enjoy doing every day of my life. Math has significantly helped me gain important life skills. My math teacher loved what she did and had such a strong passion for math that if I had to teach a subject, it would be math as well.
