My Way of Non-Traditional Learning by LATISHA - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a 39-year-old mother of two, a wife of eleven years, and a full-time student at the University of Phoenix, my journey has been one of learning, growth, and spiritual development. In addition to pursuing a degree in education, I also serve as a minister at my church and study theology at the International School of the Prophets. This dual role, as both a student and a minister, has profoundly influenced my approach to learning, particularly in how I navigate my studies at seminary and my secular education.

At the International School of the Prophets, I am working towards a Doctorate in Theology of Biblical Studies, a program that has introduced me to a non-traditional way of learning. The seminary emphasizes hands-on, interactive learning methods, such as drills, student involvement, and deep discussions, which challenge students to engage with spiritual concepts on a profound level. Rather than simply answering questions, our assignments require us to receive and expound upon specific topics, pushing us to deepen our understanding of spiritual matters. The grading rubric in seminary is designed to cultivate proficiency in discerning spiritual truths, motivating students to develop a thirst for a deeper knowledge of God.

One of the most profound lessons I have learned at seminary is the importance of curiosity in spiritual growth. The experience is like exploring the abyss of the ocean—a deep, mysterious space that compels exploration. Just as the mysteries of the ocean captivate scientists, the mysteries of God create a similar desire in seminary students to seek out the hidden truths of life and faith. This desire for discovery and deeper understanding has had a lasting impact on my personal and academic life, instilling in me a hunger for growth.

The skills and techniques I have acquired through seminary have had a transformative effect on my secular studies at the University of Phoenix. When given an assignment, I now approach it with the same curiosity and discipline that seminary has instilled in me. I delve into research, seeking to uncover the deeper meaning behind the material, and I reference various sources to expand my understanding of each topic. This approach has led to academic success, enabling me to achieve high marks consistently in my studies.

This period of my life represents a season of learning and growth. The disciplined techniques I have learned are helping me excel both spiritually and academically. By investing time and effort into mastering my education, I am not only developing as a student but also as a more open-minded and thoughtful person. My broader vantage point now allows me to see life more clearly, and I feel empowered to seek out the hidden meanings and deeper truths in all areas of my life.

In conclusion, my journey through seminary and my studies at the University of Phoenix have been deeply intertwined, each reinforcing the other. Seminary has taught me how to approach learning with curiosity and discipline, while my secular education has provided a practical outlet for applying these techniques. As I continue to grow and learn, I am confident that this season of my life will lead to great personal and spiritual fulfillment, equipping me for success in both my academic pursuits and my spiritual calling.
