Courage by Latia - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

My freshman year in high school was a big deal I mean come on every kid dreams of being in high school where you don't have to walk in lines or be assisted by teachers in our eyes we were pretty much adults. My freshman year was great I had amazing grades, and a great GPA I was so proud of myself I was ecstatic for my sophomore year. I was also a volleyball player I have been playing all my life but there was things I just could not do, and was not willing to try because I was scared of failure. Volleyball was really the only motivation I had in my life, it kept going relieved my anger and kept my distracted form my depression.

Along comes sophomore year first semester, and I was not as ready as I planned to be. I was going through a lot that year, and dealing with heavy depression. My grades dropped tremendously as well as my GPA it was embarrassing I was no longer that proud student. Finally second semester rolls around and I meet a woman that I did not know would impact my life in such a way. Her name was Shanel Goodson it was her first year at the school. She was a tall and slender African American woman with long beautiful hair. She was like no other teacher I had ever met at Lexington Senior High School, I felt comfortable with her I seen her as an older sister. I talked to her about any and everything it didn't matter if it was just about the weather.

When you are growing up you would never think that life would be so hard you just focus on wanting to be an adult. In many of my battles she taught me to never lose hope to just have courage. The word courage can effect a person in a multitude of ways. When I was down about life she told me just to have courage. When I was worried about my grades she told me to do my best and never lose courage in myself. On the volleyball court when I was scared to attempt things that I thought I would fail at she taught me whenever I fall to get back up strong and have the courage to do it again. It takes a strong person to have courage, but it takes an even stronger to instill courage into such a despondent human being. Shanel Goodson is the reason I have built up the courage to apply for college when I didn't think I was smart enough she convinced me to have the courage to apply.
